Avoiding Monotony

Brewer's sparrow has a typical repertoire of a dozen or so songs, while Hutton's vireo is perhaps the most boring bird in California. The song of the marsh wren illustrates variety in typical songbird song.

Chris Tenney recorded the Hutton's vireo and the Northern mockingbird in Salinas, and the marsh wren in Sierraville. The Brewer's sparrow's song can be found on the CD Bird Songs of California produced by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.
